Message from the President of IAODAPCA

WHERE YOUR HEART IS, THERE YOU WILL BE   
As I began preparing this message, my first thoughts to you as your new Board President beginning July 1, 2010, I reflected on my years in this field and years of affiliation with IAODAPCA.  What came to my mind was the reality that my professional heart has been with the finest professional organization since the 1990’s; I have had the privilege of working with and for IAODAPCA for the past 2 decades.  And so, ‘there I will be’ and here I am!

I would like each of you reading this Newsletter to ask yourself this question: Where is YOUR professional heart?  Is it where it was when you first entered this field?  You remember those days, don’t you?  Most of us, I imagine, believed we could and would make a difference in the lives of our clients, their families, loved ones and close friends.  Over the course of your time in this field, is your heart still here or have you taken the time lately to even notice? If your heart isn’t still here, what can we as a Board do to help?  You are all so valued and appreciated!

For many of us ‘seasoned veterans’, I’ve personally been in this field for nearly 30 yrs., a time of reflection seems to be something we talk about, discuss, laugh about, and share stories in a somewhat melancholy manner.  For those of us who continue to work in this field, we agree on one thing; we know where our professional hearts happen to reside and it’s in the field of addictions with the tremendous support of IAODAPCA!

To share a little inside background with you, I originally planned to title my little message, “A-B-C/1-2-3”, and because I still like the sound of that catchy little phrase I think I’ll go ahead and share with you what it means to me.  The ABC refers to the many certifications or registrations that IAODAPCA manages; call it alphabet soup if you’d like.  Just a few examples: CADC, CRADC, CSADP, PCGC, RDDP.   In addition to the numerous certifications, IAODAPCA has twenty-four Accredited Training Programs throughout the State of Illinois, constituting the 1,2,3 aspect of that catchy little phrase.  Here are a few more examples of alphabet soup which represent a portion of our ATP sites:  ASPP (Adler School of Professional Psychology), SIU (So. IL. University Carbondale), AU (Aurora University), ICC (IL. Central College), UIS (University of IL. at Springfield), and IVCC (IL. Valley Community College).

There are fifteen members serving on your Board of Directors.  They are dedicated volunteers who WORK for you willingly, passionately, thoughtfully, honestly and with integrity. We work for you because you deserve to be heard and we want to listen. Each board member is actively involved with at least one committee, more alphabet soup: CCTC (Certification Criteria and Testing Committee), ETC (Education and Training Committee), and the PAC (Program Accreditation Committee) to name a few.   Your board members represent Northwestern IL., Northeastern IL., Central IL., Southern IL., and the Chicagoland area.  Any board member representing your specific region is available by phone, e-mail, fax, or snail mail. We relish your input and feedback.  We want to know what’s on your mind!  We consider it a privilege to serve you because YOU are Where Our Hearts Happen to Be!
