Message from the Executive Director, Jessica Hayes |
CORE
CORE Illinois was officially “rolled out” at this year’s spring conference in Itasca. On Tuesday Morning March 23, 2010 Bill Johnson, Interim Executive Director for CORE-Illinois and John Reese, Interim President along with several other speakers presented to the morning plenary session attendees the history and background of the development of Core-Illinois. For more information on the roots of the organization you can go to the website CORE-Illinois.org. CORE-Illinois’ mission statement reads: • Those who work/volunteer in the addiction field CORE- Illinois envisions itself as an energetic and involved association, helping its members in their effort to provide quality prevention services, ensures treatment availability and ongoing recovery support. Both Bill and John stressed that CORE-Illinois is not affiliated with any organization, including IAODAPCA, and it must be made perfectly clear to all that CORE-Illinois purchases administrative services from IAODAPCA. On Wednesday, March 24, 2010, the first full Board of Directors meeting was held. At this meeting many of the official organizational structure issues were ratified and or resolved. Committee structure and memberships were assigned. The board meeting was followed on Thursday, March 25, 2010 when Bill Houlihan, Downstate Director for U.S. Senator Dick Durbin presented the keynote address. Bill congratulated us on our efforts on behalf of addicted and recovering people, as well as challenged us to become better advocates for our clients. Bill used his many years in politics to provide us with some important tips to better advocacy. Overall, the reception CORE-Illinois received at the spring conference was overwhelmingly positive with great enthusiasm. A common statement was “this should have been done years ago.” Many people stopped by the booth, and signed up on the spot to become members or received information on how to be a member. Why should you as a Certified Addiction Counselor become a member? Consider this funding chart below—if we do not act today with a united voice, it is a fair question to ask if we will be there for our future clients. Please add your voice to this important movement.
