- Workshop 13 "Tobacco Dependence and Recovery: Why is it so Hard to Quit
Smoking?" – Corinne Kalat, MS, LCPC, CADC, PCGC, TAS, CHT
- In this practical, nuts-and-bolts workshop, we will discuss the challenges
of tobacco recovery and effective and easy-to-use treatment strategies to
work with tobacco-dependent clients. The workshop will include information
on patterns of use, quitting difficulties, nicotine and the brain,
standards of practice, intake and assessment tools, and counseling and
relapse-prevention strategies. These strategies and tools can be used
during substance abuse treatment and/or with already recovering clients
and/or with other tobacco-dependent clients.
- Workshop 14 "Depression and Suicidality Assessment" – David Schilling,
MA, CSADC, LCPC
- Assessing depression and the potential for self-destructive behavior is a
critical skill for the substance abuse counselor. In this practical, handson,
how-to workshop participants will examine interview skills and the
use of the Beck Depression Inventory for the assessment of depression.
Differential diagnosis for primary versus secondary depression will be
discussed together with the stages of grief. Attention will be given to the
role of spirituality as it relates to the individual’s sense of meaning and
purpose. Clinical management and crisis intervention skills will be
addressed.
- Workshop 15 "Understanding Client’s Cognitive Processes: Behaviors,
Patterns and Beliefs" Cheri DeMoss, MA. CADC, MAC
- This workshop will focus on how client’s behaviors, actions, decisions
and outcomes are directly controlled by their family belief systems.
Participants will learn to recognize clients’ beliefs by their behaviors and
family patterns. How these beliefs are created and maintained will be
explored. Participants will understand the impact these beliefs have on
the clinicians and clients ability to enjoy life, have fulfilling relationships
and raise confident children.
- Workshop 16 "Stalking and Other Addictions: A Disordered Attachment
Variant" - Diane Powers, PsyD, CADC
- This workshop will cover stalking as a disordered mourning variant to
include all addictions. Included in the discussion will be the essential
ideas about attachment patterns from John Bowlby and other attachment
theorists. Childhood and adult attachment patterns will be covered
including associated personality disorders. A case history will be included
for application and discussion.
- Workshop 17 "Compassion Fatigue: The Cost of Caring" - Cheryl Bristor,
LCSW, CADC, CEAP
- The goal of this workshop is to provide an overview of compassion
fatigue, so that the participants are aware of how it could potentially
affect them. In addition, the workshop aims to provide participants with
specific skills and strategies that they can utilize to overcome/avoid this
syndrome.
- Workshop 18 "The Shift to the Recovery Paradigm" – Trenton Fedrick, MHS,
CADC
- For years addiction counselors have had to be counselor, case manager,
coach and tracker. Where does the addiction counselor fit in the picture
as the focus of treatment shifts in the addiction community from the
acute care model to the recovery management model, and as new types
of agencies are introduced that offer only recovery support, and faithbased
organizations allowed to proselytize enter the fold? This workshop
will take a closer look at the counselor’s role in treating a population still
in need.
