Counselors of Problem and Compulsive Gambling Certification (PCGC) Introduction Counselors of Problem and Compulsive Gambling fill a unique role among health and human service professionals. Such practitioners work in a variety of settings and utilize numerous treatment approaches. They recognize the need to assure quality care to consumers. Toward that end, the ICB has designed this voluntary credentialing system for treatment professionals who provide services to adult/juvenile problem and compulsive gamblers.
The demonstrated link between problem and compulsive gambling, alcohol/drug abuse and criminal behavior has resulted in the development of this credentialing process. Individuals seeking this certification must be knowledgeable of problem and compulsive gambling, criminal justice, and substance abuse treatment systems. ICB realizes that counselors of problem and compulsive gambling are educated in a wide range of disciplines including criminal justice, addictions, social work, mental health, psychology, and other behavioral health disciplines. The counselor of problem and compulsive gambling certification is designed to assess an individual's ability to provide treatment and case management services to problem and compulsive gambling involved individuals. It defines a problem and compulsive gambling professional's role and function, thus distinguishing these individuals among other health and human service providers. The certification process is designed to accommodate and evaluate those who are both experientially trained, as well as those who are academically trained. The certification process defines core knowledge and skill bases needed by all problem and compulsive gambling counseling professionals regardless of their training, orientation or occupation. This process sets a baseline standard for treatment professionals working in any clinical counseling setting when providing an array of services to gambling involved offenders. Such professionals are given recognition for meeting specific predetermined criteria. The purpose is to assure that quality treatment services are available to adult and juvenile gambling involved individuals. Certification provides a professional credential that can guide employers in selecting competent staff and sets the direction for further professional growth. Definition & Setting This certification process was developed for treatment professionals working with the problem and compulsive gambling populations. The setting in which the required number of work and supervised hours must be met is defined as: Any setting which provides counseling, service coordination, behavior management, or behavior shaping to adult or juvenile individuals. | ||
