Under the Illinois Model for Certification of AODA Assessment and Referral Specialists (CARS), certified AODA assessors are required to pay a biennial recertification fee and submit 40 continuing education units (CEUs).

Each certified AODA assessor will be notified that his or her certification is about to expire no fewer than 30 days prior to the expiration of certification. The assessor should pay the biennial recertification fee and submit CEUs after receiving such notification. The assessor should not submit CEUs until the biennial notice is recieved.

Continuing Education Requirements
The purpose of continuing education is to promote ongoing professional development. It benefits the individual, group, organization, and community to whom assessment/referral services are provided, as well as the Certified AODA Assessment/Referral Specialist (CARS), and the CARS profession.
